Former President Trump Survives Assassination Attempt, Attributes Safety to ‘Divine Intervention’
In a dramatic recounting at the Republican National Convention, former President Donald Trump detailed an assassination attempt that occurred during a rally in Pennsylvania. Speaking after accepting the Republican presidential nomination, Trump expressed his belief that divine intervention saved his life during the attack.
“I am not supposed to be here tonight,” Trump told the cheering crowd. “I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of almighty God.” He described the harrowing moment when a bullet narrowly missed him as he leaned forward to look at a screen displaying immigration data. “In order to see the chart, I started to turn to my right. I began to turn a little bit further, which I am very lucky I did not do,” he said. “If I had not moved my head at the very last instant, the assassin’s bullet would have perfectly hit its mark, and I would not be with you tonight.”
The bullet, which grazed his ear, prompted a swift response from Secret Service agents who whisked the 78-year-old Republican nominee off the stage. Trump described hearing a “loud whizzing sound” and feeling a sharp pain in his ear, realizing immediately that he had been shot. “There was blood pouring everywhere, and yet, in a certain way, I felt very safe because I had God on my side.”
The attacker, identified as 20-year-old nursing aide Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by Secret Service snipers. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Melania Trump made a notable appearance at the convention, her first this election cycle. She has been actively supporting the conservative LGBTQ organization Log Cabin Republicans, helping to raise significant funds for their outreach initiatives targeting swing state voters.
Despite the drama surrounding the attack, Trump’s acceptance speech was criticized for containing numerous false claims, spanning topics such as the economy, immigration, and foreign policy. CNN counted more than 20 misleading or false statements in his address.
Trump concluded his recounting of the attack by stating that he would not discuss the incident further, having initially shared his reaction on Truth Social. His supporters, however, continue to rally behind him, bolstered by his assertion of divine protection.
